Week 35 (May 20 – 24)

P.A.W.S. Field Trip!

(PEQUOD’S for LUNCH)

In Reading and Language Arts, our class read a Persuasive article in Storyworks, “Would You Squash This?” and then we thoroughly collected varying opinions on both sides of the argument about squashing bugs or not. We even posed “It Depends” points for research. Our class is building a strong and convincing Introduction paragraph, so we can continue to grow in confidence as skilled writers. Reading: SSR with a “Comprehension and Connections” gave us an opportunity to finish up a reading session and reflect on all of the literary terms and skills.

In Social Studies, our class visited PAWS Adoption Center in Lincoln Park and presented a check for over $700 to the grateful founder and staff of the Largest No-Kill Dog and Cat Animal Shelter in the Chicago are. After our tour and  We visited Ms. Lisa’s Class as they inspired us with their individual, biographies on famous people throughout history. This special event was a “WAX MUSEUM”. Bravo to Ms. Lisa and her students! They did such an amazing job.

During Science and Math, 

(Physics in Flight: Paper Airplane All-School Competition)

(Mini-Project) OWLS Our class finished and presented our Google Slides Presentation on 12 different species of owls from all around the world.  There are 10 different topics that will constitute their completed project, additionally we are each adding . Health (Puberty, Reproduction, Healthy Relationships) taught us more about bodies as we grow and age. We learned not only the physical changes that are occurring, but also how our emotions and relationships will continue to grow.

Week 34 (May 13 – 17)

OWLS and Van Gogh (Sculpture Prep)

ART: We learned about how Vincent Van Gogh would be the inspiration for our school sculpture. Our class provided the fine detail and finishing touches on The Owl Sculpture.

In Social Studies, our class lead our Class Project Fundraiser (PAWS) was a huge success! We raised over $720. I am so proud of the planning, creativity, kindness and dedication our class displayed during this school-led Service Project. Our class will be visiting PAWS in Lincoln Park on next Wednesday, May 22. (Parent’s Reminder: your student brought home a Waiver for them to enjoy this Field Trip).

(MATH JEOPARDY!) 

During Science and Math, 

(Mini-Project) OWLS Our class continued to explore facts and creatively construct our Google Slides Presentation. There are 10 different topics that will constitute their completed project, additionally we are each adding . Math Jeopardy returned to our classroom and provided an abundance of varied skills. Many of the problems that were used came from our current math studies: ratios, fractions, percents, decimals, multiplication, and geometry. Thank you to Ms. Beth’s Class for hosting a gallery of “Genius Projects that each student created to inform and inspire us with a topic about which they were curious.

In Reading and Language Arts, our class took the annual State Testing this week. We reviewed helpful testing strategies and shared personal strategies to help us be more successful when we need to focus for such a long period of time.  Our class used the remaining time from each testing section to catch on some good books and try some new stories that we might want to continue exploring.

In Math, our class reviewed and explored some interesting topics this week. Math Challenges everyday our class is presented with a handful of problems that may be review or pushing our knowledge of mathematical skills. This week our mathematical skills from over the course of the school year were tested spanning 2 days of different topics and challenges.

During Science, 

(Visiting New Baby Chicks in Ms. Ela’s Class)

(Mini-Project) OWLS Our class began a short week long research project as we prepare to paint, as a school, the Owl statue positioned in the Main Entrance Foyer. Each one of us has selected a different species of Owl. There are 10 different topics that we must research and then compile into a Google Slides Presentation in front of our classmates.

Week 32: (April 29 – May 2)

Visiting The Bee Shop

In Reading and Language Arts, our class received their graded Final Exam of “Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry”. We reviewed and discussed the format  for the final test that covered the entire novel. The test included: 20 Multiple Choice, 10 Fill in the Blank, and 1 essay (Select 1 of 3 Essay Questions to write upon). I was very proud of the class effort and skill at not only remembering many characters, settings, and events in the book, but how we can connect and analyze the text. “Battle of the Books: Round 3”: WOW! So many stories, hours and effort from our class to complete their assignment of reading 4 of the 8 books that our teams were tested on. I was so proud of all my students and their teams: “The Blue Monkeys”, “Monkeys on Mars”, “John the Onion”, and “The Reading Racers”!

In Math, our class reviewed and explored some interesting topics this week. Math Challenges everyday our class is presented with a handful of problems that may be review or pushing our knowledge of mathematical skills. This week our mathematical skills from over the course of the school year were tested via 3 different multiple choice assessments. After a week of really hard work, curiosity, and creativity we had some Game Time to laugh and learn from each other!

We are Smart, Kind, Athletic, Funny and CAN DANCE!!

During Science, we visited The Bee Shop (hosted by Ms. Soraya and Ms. Anna’s classes for their Service Project). They were teaching and reminding our school of the importance of the simple Bee for the balance of a healthy Ecosystem and growth of so many varieties of plants and flowers. Also, our class reinforced our Math skills by understanding how to receive accurate change when purchasing items to support such a great cause! studied the Environment, especially the effects of Erosion on beaches. Our class put our nonfiction literacy knowledge to the test as we unpacked  Vocabulary associated with erosion and how we can effectively inform others about this concern. Our class completed a STEM covering Psychology . Each one of us created personal and honest lists of 3 Things We Love (Food or Activities) and 3 Things We Strongly Dislike (Food or Activity). Each one of us was randomly partnered up with another classmate. We each were the Tester, as well as, the Subject being studied. Science Fair: each group met and continued to question what materials would be necessary and crafted the scientific detailed procedures and instructions necessary to test their Hypotheses.
